Mobile Phone – Need to recycle cell phone at a mobile phone recycling center

O2 has been operating a handset-recycling scheme called Fonebak since 2004

United Nations has chosen gadget-obsessed mobile phone users to be the keynote topic at the five-day conference of the Conference to the Parties of the Basel Convention held in Indonesia later this week.

A statement issued by the Basel Convention members adds that there are approximately three billion mobile phones in the world today, and “sooner or later these phones will be discarded, whole or in parts”.

Many countries, including UK, have companies that offer a ‘recycling’ policy in which old handsets are refurbished and sent to third world countries help these regions develop into a sustainable society, this solution may not be a solution at all, especially if those phones are stripped of valuable components and tossed away where they will “leech out their heavy metals and hazardous chemicals”.

Some cell phones and their accessories contain substances that are amongst the 10 most dangerous known to man including Cadmium, Rhodium, Palladium, Beryllium and Lead Solder.

Most Mobile phones consist of following substance —

ABS-PC , Ceramics, Cu and compounds, Silicon Plastics, Epoxy , Iron, PPS , Flame retardant, Nickel and compounds, Zinc and compounds , Silver and compounds , Al, Sn, Pb, Au, Pd, Mn

Ni-Cd batteries contain Cadmium, a dangerous toxic and carcinogenic substance; mobiles also contain arsenic, mercury and other dangerous toxic substances. The quantity in landfill sites is significant, and considerable toxic contamination is caused by the inevitable medium and long-term effects of these substances leaking into the surrounding soil.
